Meeting Minutes 2 Februry 2009

1. OPENING REMARKS – John Goodland, president, announced to members present that the association now has a website, thanks to Bill Tobin. Messages about what the association is doing, BRA meeting notices and minutes, etc. will be posted on a website as a blog. The blog address is: beachroadassociation.blogspot.com/. It was also announced that the BRA has established an e-mail address: beachroadassociation@yahoo.com. Goodland noted that a roster roll call sheet was circulated. A total of 36 members were present representing 15 condominiums.

2. SECRETARY’S REPORT: Gerry Johnson, secretary, called for a motion to dispense with the reading of the minutes of the last meeting. There was a motion and a second made, and the minutes were approved as mailed.

3. TREASURER’S REPORT: Joe Walsh, treasurer, announced that the association has a bank account balance of $ (Redacted). A money market account balance stood at $ (Redacted)

4. BOARD DECISION: The president advised members that the BRA Board of Directors has approved proceeding with the final phase of the landscaping, and it will occur mostly on the west side of the bridge on the south side of Beach Road. This area was an older landscaping project and most of the plantings had died. Plants to be installed new will be basically low maintenance. Also, a tree will be replaced and there will be many new plantings on the north side of Beach Road. Goodland said a bid from a contractor had been received amounting to approximately $ (Redacted). The assessment of $(Redacted) per unit is to be mailed to each condominium’s president and will be paid by their association. A discussion resulted with the member consensus being favorable.

5. SPEAKER: The speaker for this meeting was Roy Rood, pioneer of this area, who resides in Jupiter Inlet Colony. Rood told of his growing up in Jupiter, having been born here in 1918 on a farm in West Jupiter. He said, the first post office here was on their property and it was placed on the map as a settlement called Rood. He gave an account of his family and what it was like living here then. His family was in the dairy farm business, but eventually left the farm and moved to town. He told of doctors making house calls from West Palm Beach on pretty rough roads, requiring big, high-wheeled cars. Roy’s father became a carpenter. Before moving to the Colony 52 years ago, the family lived in a house on County Line Road. This home sat on property the Rood’s purchased. Later, Roy founded Rood Landscaping, which became very successful and in big demand through the years. A humorous note – Rood said in high school that he graduated in the top four of his class. There were four seniors altogether. After graduating, he joined the Navy, returning to continue the landscaping business. He talked of local legend, Trapper Nelson, whom he said initially lived on the inlet doing the first years of his trapping along the shore. Later, Nelson acquired his settlement on the Loxahatchee River near Jonathan Dickinson State Park. Following his talk, Rood answered many questions from the audience.

6. ANNOUNCEMENT: President Goodland expressed appreciation for the large attendance at the meeting, then announced that the Board of Directors had voted to eliminate the December meeting and change the meeting date to the second Monday of each month rather than the first, next year. The thinking was that more island residents would be available to attend.

7. OLD BUSINESS: The subject of elevator refurbishment in some buildings surfaced again. Ken Whost, president of Seawatch, had pointed out last month that his condominium was facing elevator repairs or replacement. He asked if other buildings were having problems. Some showed concern since many of the elevators date back to the 80s. Whost indicated any president’s or unit owners of buildings having such problems could contact him and possibly work cooperatively in any future elevator projects. He indicated such an arrangement could save considerable money.

8. NEXT SPEAKER: President Goodland announced the next meeting speaker would be Andrew Kato, artistic director of the Maltz Jupiter Theatre. The meeting is scheduled for Monday, March 2nd.

9. ADJOURNMENT: With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 5:05pm.
